Mercedes Shows Off Gorgeous New SLR Variant

Mercedes, keeping with the tradition of producing limited editions of its SLR McLaren supercar, has released concept photos of what will be the final variants of the SLR. Dubbed the SLR Stirling Moss, it is a continuation of the heritage line of SLRs that pay respect to Mercedes' 1955 win at the Mille Miglia endurance race. The first special editions of the SLR were the 722, the number and start time of the 300 SLR that won the event (pictured below), and Stirling Moss was the driver for the event.

It has a sort of Dodge Viper shape, with exhaust pipes jetting out to the side just in front of the drivers seat, but the similarities to that supercar end there. Concept drawing show the car with Lamborghini-style lifting doors, and there are no windshields for the car. It also carries over the same engine from the 722 edition, with 641 horsepower.
The price for these cars will run a hefty $1 million each, although they will only be sold in Europe.

White House Warns Against Hopes of Bailout by Monday

It's something I've been avoiding: writing about the desperate cries for help from the U.S. auto industry. Everyone knows by now that the 3 American auto manufacturers, General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, have been pleading with Congress for at least $14 billion to keep themselves operating. Ford has enough cash to keep going through 2009 but is seeking help in case the financial markets do not improve in order to lend money in the future. GM and Chrysler are dangerously close to running to of funds, and will do so in a few weeks if emergency legislation is not passed.
The downturn in sales can likely be attributed to the rising gas prices of the last few years and the reliance of U.S. auto manufacturers on sport utility vehicles, which usually offer piss-poor gas mileage. The SUVs carried high profit margins and demand was high when gas was less than $2/gallon, but rising gas prices have seen consumers fleeing to fuel efficient vehicles from Japan and Germany. Because cars take years from drawings to production, automakers were unable to respond quickly enough to push new models into the marketplace. Competitors were able to release cheap, fuel efficient, fun to drive cars like the new generation Honda Civic and Mini Cooper, as well as fuel misers like the Toyota Prius, while the Big 3 produced cars that were too plain, didnt have interior materials that were not up to par with foregein rivals, or rides deemed to harsh for daily commutes (Ford Focus and Dodge Caliber, I am looking at you).
If these guys begged for money a year ago, I would say, let them go. Restructuring is greatly needed, and consolidation of too many brands is greatly needed. Some brands are dated and neeed to go (Hummer is dead in the water, too many are produced for such a niche market; GMC is a bunch of rebadged SUVs and trucks from other GM offerings; the Mercury brand is a money sink).
However, unemployment just hit 6.7%, and the last thing we need is a whole lot of people out of work. There are a lot of jobs at stake in Detroit and the surrounding areas, and a significant amount of layoffs could exacerbate the current economic crisis. Not to mention Wall Street's reaction to such news, which has been optimistic in the last couple of weeks due to anticipated passing of a bailout bill.
A lot of lawmakers in Congress have been hesitant of handing out money to the auto industry, after the debacle that was the financial bailout, a hastily dispersed trove of cash that has been handed out to many financial institutions without any real provisions as to how the money must be spent. Congress will be more thourough this time around, but the bill needs to pass soon, if only not to escalate the crumbling economy.

Feel free to comment on this article, and we will be back to reporting regular new model information soon!

Audi's R8 Finally Gets a V-10

Audi announced a few days ago that its first supercar, the R8, will be fitted with a 5.2 liter V-10, a more powerful version of the engines in the S6 and S8 sedans. It will output 518 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque, compared with the 420 hp and 317 lb-ft of the normal R8. Fuel economy is expected to plummet, but it will get a bit less than 17 mpg, which is respectable for such a large engine. The increase in power leads to a 3.9 second sprint to 60 from a standstill for the V-10, whereas the V-8 hits it in 4.6 seconds, according to Audi. The R8, when it was still being conceived as a concept car, was rumored to have a detuned version of Lamborghini's V-10 but Audi claimed that such an engine would not fit into the R8.
The exterior will stay similar to the normal model, although the Front headlights will be composed entirely of LEDs. It will also feature the mascara-like LEDs that run along underneath the main lights that Audi has incorporated into all of its 2009 models, originally seen on the V-8 R8. It will also keep its controversial side blades fore of the rear wheels.
The V-10 will also bring up the price tag over the already expensive supercar, which currently suffers from obscene dealer mark ups. It is going on sale in Germany to the tune of $182,000, but when it comes to the U.S., don't expect it to fetch anywhere near the MSRP. At this price level it will compete with the Ferrari F430 and the Porsche GT2.

2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

I'll admit right now that I am a Honda guy. I've driven all kinds of other cars, and other than my dad's old GMC Diablo, I just have not been impressed. That said, I have a thing for Corvettes. I know a lot of people like to talk about how they are overrated, too expensive, or a sign of a midlife crisis. While the latter may be true, to the former, I don't say a word...

I like to let the pictures do the talking, and if these don't change your mind, nothing will. Chevy is re-introducing the ZR1 late in the model year (It was recently produced from 1990 to 1995). The ZR1 boasts a 6.2L V8 with a ridiculous 638 horsepower and 604 lb/ft of torque. According to the New York Times, the ZR1's 0-60 time is even faster than the Ferrari Enzo! What's more, the car actually hits 20 mpg on the highway ("Hey! You spilled your gas mileage on my sports car!" - my first thought). Inside Line has a video that compares Nissan's GT-R to the Chevy's Corvette ZR1.

Porsche Finally Releases Pictures of Long-Rumored Sports Sedan

Porsche has recently released photos of its forthcoming Panamera sedan, and boy, is it going to piss off Porsche fans. The exterior styling combines a classic 911 front end with a stretched out Chrysler Crossfire back end, complete with Ford Focus-style accents in front of the front doors, with the same awkward rear-sloping hatchback.
The engine will be placed in the front of the car, similar to the Volkswagen Tour- err, Porsche Cayenne, and it is rumored to carry the same engine combinations as that car, from the lowly V-6 to the turbocharged V-8 that gulps gas like $5/gallon was a distant memory.
Porsche has been is a company known for bucking the trend, and that philosophy lives on in the Panamera, as it shares none on the sexy looks of the Lamborghini Estoque concept sedan or the Aston Martin Rapide concept. Still, It may prove to be a wise business move to those looking for something more exciting than a mega-luxury yacht like the Lexus LS or BMW 7 series.

2010 Mustang Revealed to Public: Mild Upgrades

This week at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Ford will show the public a slightly redesigned Mustang that includes some cool new exterior bits, as well as a slightly pumped up engine. The car, more a refresh than a completely new version, will feature an engine similar to that in the limited-edition Bullit variant that was released in early 2008. The size of the V-8 will remain 4.6 liters, but thanks to a new cold air intake, the power will rise slightly to 315HP.
The interior will supposedly be a bit more refined, with the addition of softer plastics, and interior shots of the car hint at more comfortable seats. Not that the seats will offer that much protection from bumpy roads, as the redesign will also carry over the live rear axle suspension that the models have become notorious for in the days of independent rear suspension. Well, that's the trade-off for a low price, I suppose.
The exterior looks much better than the current car, with the front end getting GT-500 style diagonal arms next to the lights, and the rear end gets curvier taillights. Expect the redesign to keep the masses full until an all-new Mustang arrives in a few years.

Audi Unleashes Monster TT for 2009

Audi has recently shown off a new, more expensive version of its sexy two-seater, the TT. This upgraded car, dubbed the Audi TTS. The TTS uses a similar 2.0 turbocharged 4-cylinder that is shared between the Audi and Volkswagen brands in the Audi A4, Volkswagen Passat, and several other models. The difference this time is direct fuel injection, and the revised engine, coupled with the direct injection, offers up some tasty numbers. While the standard 2.0T that is available now offers up a respectable 200HP and 207lb-ft of torque, the new engine pumps out 265HP and 258lb-ft.
What's more, the turbos don't require a heck of a lot of fuel, so expect the TTS to sip fuel like its baby brother, roadandtrack.com estimate fuel consumption to hover around 29 MPG.

Merc's 2010 SL65 Black Series Kills Your Wallet at $300K

That's right, as if the SL65 wasn't exclusive enough, Mercedes has unveiled a fixed-top version of its popular hardtop convertible that puts out an insane 661HP and 738 lb-ft of torque mated to a 5-speed automatic tranny.
This is the second Black Series car released in the U.S., the first being the CLK63 Black Series, released earlier this year. That car was released at only 350 examples, and the HP gain over the standard CLK63 was 56, with torque rising 21 lb-ft. The SL65 Black Series will carry over the standard SL65's twin-turbo V-12, with horsepower rising 57 and torque numbers staying the same.
Like the CLK Black Series, the upgraded car will carry a much more aggressive body kit, as well as a hell of a lot of carbon fiber to make the car lighter and to somewhat justify the higher cost. While official numbers have not been released yet, it is safe to bet that this Black will also be in limited quantities, and will be ultimate bragging rights over other Merc owners, even the ones who own the SLR Mclaren.

it's not JUST a Honda

Honda's finest achievement so far has to be the Acura NSX. What makes this car special is the fact that the body is composed of carbon fiber panels over an all-aluminum unit body frame. Which makes the car super light, that results in super fast.

Preview of the 2009 Acura NSX.

Engine:
5.5 liter high-rev V10 producing around 550 horsepower.
Top Speed: 200 mph 0-60 3.8 seconds
Honda’s VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) technology, allowing the engine to run on only 5 cylinders, boosting fuel efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions.

Competitors:
Porsche 911 Turbo, Ferrari F430, Lamborghini Gallardo and the new Maserati GT. This car runs with the elite of all cars. This will be the most powerful Honda ever.
For about a $100,000 the car will be yours in about a year.

2008 Aston Martin DBS: James Bond's Quantum of Solace Car

Since it's the opening weekend to the highly anticipated 007's Casino Royale sequel, I figured it would be a good time to show you the Mr. Bond's new car.

This Ultra high-performance vehicle is built with a V12 engine capable of a cool 510 HP and 420 lbs. of torque, with a 0-60 time of 4.3 seconds. Unfortunately, the consumer version of the car won't come with a defibrillator or a silenced weapon compartment. The movie studios also had to make some modifications, such as raising the suspension and strengthening and weakening certain body parts for the crash scenes. The version that you can drive will not handle like the ones in the movie...

Yes, that is a $265,000 Aston Martin DBS being pulled out of a lake with a crane. If you do end up spending a quarter of a million dollars on a car, by all means, enjoy it. Just don't enjoy it that much...

Tips for Buying a Car Online

As promised, I am going to walk you through how to buy a car online. The days of walking into a dealership, playing the "I'm just looking" game, and waiting for 15 minutes while the salesman "talks to his manager" are over. Buying a car online can save you a lot of money, if you know how.

Car salesmen that work on the lot get paid primarily on commission. The more they can "upsell" you, the more money they take home. Internet salesmen get paid by volume. Their goal is to move as many cars as possible. To anyone that is skeptical, the truth is that some dealerships may even take a loss on one car, if it means hitting one of their "quotas" or "goals", because they get what is called "holdback" from the manufacturer. Some car companies have different systems, like offering 1/2% or 1% per car sold, while others pay $250 or $500 per car sold. If they had a sales quota of 25 and a sales goal of 50, hitting the quota would net the dealership the 1/2% or $250 per car sold, while selling 50 would get them 1% or $500 per car sold.

Now, the first and most crucial step is the preparation. You have to know exactly what you are looking for. Know the different trim levels, the different add-ons, and the invoice price of your car. I spent a few hours browsing the edmunds.com forums, where they have discussions specifically for prices paid and buying experiences. Their True Market Value tool is pretty useful also. You may find other forums more helpful, depending on what car you are looking for.

Also, know how you are going to pay for it, if you're financing it, and what the interest rates are. If you have one, know the value of your trade-in as well. Be aware that they will lowball you on the trade-in if you pinch them on the price of the car. I would really recommend attempting to sell your car yourself, or using Carmax. Use the TMV thing on edmunds and a payment calculator to find out how much your payments will be and for how long. (Note: At the dealership, interest rates are also negotiable! If you prepare a loan through the bank in advance, sometimes you can get the dealership to beat their interest rate.) It would also be helpful to find out your credit score so that you will know if you qualify for a loan or if you need a cosigner for a better rate.

Once you've done the above, you've finished half the battle. Go to the manufacturer's website, and from there, write down all of the dealerships within a 25 or 50 mile radius, depending on how far you're willing to drive. In Socal, there are a LOT of dealerships, and I found that the easiest way to keep track of stuff was to grab an old notebook and list the dealerships I was planning to email. Leave some space to take notes. Now, prepare your email. Here's an example of the one I used. Feel free to use it and alter it for your own purposes.

"Hi, my name is Frank,
I would like a price quote on a 2008 Honda Accord Coupe, EX Automatic in the Nighthawk Black Pearl (Be EXTREMELY specific on what you are looking for) color, if you have one available. Are there any promotions or incentives (Even though you already researched it and found out for yourself) on the car? Also, what financing promotions are available? I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your time.

After all of this, it's game time. Set aside a day or two to do this, because it can be a long and tedious process. Get on the manufacturer's website and punch in the required info. (I had to use different ZIP codes to get certain dealerships on Honda's website, and by doing this I found a dealership that beat all the others by $1000!) Cut and paste your email, and let them know from the get-go that you do or do not want any add-ons (i.e. window tint, custom rims, spoilers, lojack, etc.) Start going down the list, checking off each dealership as you go.

Have your phone next to you, because some dealerships will call you, even if you ask to correspond only through email. On your notepad write down every dealership's price, and cross off the ones that don't have your car and/or won't send you a quote. Some just ask you to make an appointment for a test drive. Cross them off too. Once you've weeded out the jokers, use your lowest price quote and start emailing or calling the other dealerships to see if they will beat the price. If they won't, try to get them to match it.

Once you've played the game and made your decision, let the dealership you choose know that you will be ready to buy once you have an email that breaks down the price of the car with tax and everything. Make sure it is specific, and keep your eye out for any shady wording (I had a certain dealership that came in way below all the others. Only two of the 30 or so dealerships I emailed would even match the price, and some of the people on the phone even laughed at me. This particular dealership told me that the car I had specified was available. However, they wouldn't send me the email with everything broken down after I asked them three times. I drove an hour to the dealership only to find out that the exact car I wanted was available, just not from them, or anyone they could trade with. -_- This is why you should ask the others to at least match the quote. The moral of the story is to be ready for typical dealership shenanigans, and don't put up with it.)

When it is time to head to the dealership, print your emails, and call in advance to make sure that they still actually have the car on the lot. Again, be extremely specific, and make sure it has the add-ons (or lack thereof).

From here, with all the details worked out, it should be smooth-sailing. After following these steps I was in and out of the dealership in 90 minutes. Just remember the basics, like test-driving your car and inspecting it. They will try to sell you add-ons once you are there, so just be ready. I told them I would come in the next day because I had to be at work that night, and the lady promised the deal would be quick. I think this is what kept the upselling to a minimum.

Let us know if you have any questions or any other tips.

Good luck!

The New 08/09 Accord Coupe

Honda revealed the Accord Coupe redesign back in 2005, and last year (a year earlier than they originally planned) it finally hit dealerships. Honda has always been infamous for its lazy design of the Accord Coupe, and this year, they set out to change that.

This picture shows the car with all of the spoiler options, as well as a nice set of custom rims. What it doesn't show is the fact that the v6 engine packs a surprising 268 horsepower and has a 6-speed automatic or manual transmission. It also gets 19/28 city/highway mpg, thanks to the new cylinder deactivation technology. The I4 is capable of a respectable 191 horsepower, and also manages to get about 30 mpg highway. I own this car, and can honestly say that the only problem with it is the road noise. To counteract this problem, I would recommend buying the EX trim or above, because it comes with a premium 270-watt sound system and a 10" sub. If you are looking for an actual solution, changing the tires makes a big difference. The Michelin tires that come standard are too hard, and changing them not only makes a big difference with the road noise, but also make a real difference whenever I take a corner with speed.

Right now, in SoCal, you can pick one of these up for about 22G. I got the EX trim for about 24,500 OTD, so if you are looking to buy, don't believe the dealerships that tell you the car is too limited to come down much in price. For my next post, I'll give you some tips and tricks on how to buy a car online. After doing all of the research on all of the car sites, I can definitely tell you that they missed a few things. Stay tuned. It can save you a lot of $$$.

Nissan 370Z Unveiled!

The newest version of Nissan's enormously popular Z cars has just been unveiled and will likely be hitting the dealers in just a few months! The newest car, the 370Z, is named for the 3.7 liter V-6 that it shares with the Infiniti G37, and will continue with a rear-wheel driver platform like the current Z.
The car features headlights inspired by the redesigned Nissan Maxima, as well as a more aggressive, fastback rear end that also has similar, arrow-shaped taillights.
Hopefully, the 370Z will continue the success that the 350Z has enjoyed, blending a high-performing engine with decent creature comforts and a relatively low weight and price.

Lexus Introduces New IS-Series Convertible

Lexus has just announced that they will be producing a hardtop convertible version of their entry level automobiles, the IS series.
The cars will come in two flavors, with the IS250C using the same 2.5 liter V6 as the IS250 sedan, and the IS350C using the 3.5 liter used in the IS350, ES350, and GS350 models. The cars will blend typical Lexus luxury and refinement with open-air driving, that will hopefully erase any need to buy the company's other droptop, the horrendously ugly SC430 that needs to meet a quick and quiet death.
The IS series is a big hit in the United States, especially since its redesign in 2006. Lexus' first sports sedan, the IS-F, was released last year, and it based on the IS series.

SVS Codatronca TS

Do you recognize this car? A casual observer would probably say "Car? You mean fighter jet, right?" I'm sure the car buffs noticed right away, but to those that haven't, look closely, and you'll see that this is in fact, an Italian-modified Corvette Z06.

The Codatronca was created by the Spada design family, and in an interview with Inside Line, Paolo Spada says "You either love it irrationally, or you don't." Only 20 of these cars will ever be produced, yet I felt compelled to blog about it anyway, so it's probably obvious by now that I fall into the latter category.

This catapault-of-a-car is powered by the 7 liter, V8 Corvette Z06 Engine, and is tuned to pack 621 horsepower and 493 1b-ft torque. If 621 hp just isn't enough, buyers also have the option of getting it supercharged for an extra 69 horses. The Codatronca is also 200 pounds lighter than its Corvette cousin.

Here's a youtube video if you want to see multiple angles of this car. It seems to me like car enthusiasts are divided on the looks of the Codatronca. Personally, it is unlike any other car I have seen, which is both alluring and intriguing.

The Camaro: Ready for Comeback?

After missing from the market for 8 years, Chevrolet is finally bringing back its pony car, the Camaro. The new car is quite a beast, and quite a different machine than the last few models, which Chevy stopped producing in 2002. After letting Ford monopolize the big-power, low-price car segment for the last few years, both GM and Dodge are coming back full-force, determined to knock the blue oval guys off their pedestal.
Chevy has started shipping off base V-6 models to various magazines, such as Car and Driver, in order to generate some buzz for the car. The Camaro uses the same 3.6 liter 300hp V-6 as the higher-end Cadillac CTS. The engine is coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission, or an optional 6-speed automatic. This kills the competition as far as refined engines and components goes. The Mustang uses a 4.0 liter V-6 pumping out a laughable 210hp through a 5-speed stick or auto, and the Challenger uses a 250hp V-6 using an archaic 4-speed automatic.
The new Camaro is going to be competitively priced, estimated at around $23,000. Its a couple grand more than the competitors, but for the extra dough, expect a fully independant rear suspension (so the ride isn't too harsh and cornering a bit more manageable than other offerings), a nicer interior, a more refined engine package, and those badass looks.

Putting the muscle in BMW

One of my favorite cars of all time is the BMW M series. It's when luxury meets speed resulting in a high-performance vehicle. When the new M6 coupe came out, I was thrilled. This new M series vehicle is the sports car of all BMW. Here are some of the specs and prices.

M6 Coupe 2008
Starting at $101,700 MSRP
5.0-literV-10 engine
500 horsepower
Rear-wheel drive

The car is a little pricey, but worth every cent you spend on it. With great handling, great speed, super luxury leather seats, and awesome sound system. You will not regret purchasing a such a fine machine. As they say, "You get what you pay for" in this case it's true.

2009 Dodge Challenger: A Reinvented Classic

In 2008, Dodge re-introduced the nation to the Challenger, the remake of the highly collectible muscle car from 1970 and 1971. In December of '07, Chrysler began taking deposits for the car, and eventually sold out the entire production run of 6,400 cars!

Now, the 2009 model year is upon us, and the Challenger is back. There are a few minor changes and updates compared to the 2008 model, which largely depend on the trim level.

The Challenger is offered in the bottom-end SE, which is powered by a 3.5L V6, the mid-level R/T, which offers a 5.7L V8 HEMI, as well as the R/T classic, which offers a little more retro-styling, and finally the SRT8, which offers an even bigger 6.1L V8.

Despite all of the hype and coverage of the Challenger in the auto community, the general public has yet to catch on. Since the introduction of the SE this model year has created a much more affordable version, I wager this will change. MSRP for the SE trim level starts at a mere $21,320. However, for those who are more inclined towards the more powerful version, the SRT8 is still a relatively affordable $39,320. Combine that with all the 0% financing deals running around, and Ford's Mustang just might have found its first real competitor...

Here's another video by Inside Line that shows the Challenger in action.

Toyota Supra's comeback!

Remember the Supra? Of course you do! The super, exotic, imported, sports car from Japan has made a comeback this year. After being discontinued for many years, Toyota will unleash the beast once again. According to Topspeed.com , "There will be both coupe and convertible version of the car...The convertible is reported to have a folding hard top and is intented to be more of a boutique car than a serious sport car. The coupe, however, will be just that, equipped with a 5 liter V8 engine producing 450 hp and 383 lbs-ft of torque. This engine will not be available in the open-air model because of rigidity issues. It is said that when Toyota started development of the Supra, it was only a convertible hard-top form with 4.3 liter V8. Later in the process, Toyota opted to go with a more powerful engine. But with the additional came extra loads that the convertible couldn't’t stand, so the company was forced to create a fixed-roof version of the car.

The Supra’s suspension is one befitting that of a true sport car: upper ad lower A-arms up front and a multilink setup at the rear. No doubt the tuning of the shocks and springs will be different in the V8 and V6 models, but expect both version to be relatively firm."

The V8 Supra is expected to be price at $50,000.
The more affordable version is be priced at $40,000.

Toyota is will have a sports car that will blow competitors out of the water.

Nissan GT-R (R35)

Welcome to our new blog!
Today, we're going to be giving you information on the up and coming, USA street-legal Nissan Skyline GT-R (Also known as the R35).

Nissan's GT-R was originally introduced in Japan in 1990, and it was a hit, to say the least. It was relatively easy to import, but now, almost 20 years later, the car has finally hit US soil.

The GT-R packs 473 horsepower and 433 pounds of torque into a 3.8L Twin-Turbocharged v6 engine. If that's not enough to impress you, maybe this video, by edmund's Inside Line, will change your mind.

Supposedly, less than 10% of all Nissan dealers will be able to carry this car, so despite the 70k MSRP, you can expect a hefty dealer mark-up. Overall, though, this is a lot of car for the money, and rest assured, anyone who drives one will be envied by everyone who doesn't.
